WARNING WATER

Caution water - errors when insulating concrete surfaces

Every builder - professional and amateur - realizes that good insulation of foundations, floors in a building is a key element of every building. Fighting the water in the basement of the building, moisture in the walls, floors is a huge problem, which often spends a dream of renovating or building. There is a huge amount of various materials, means and preparations available on the market for isolation and maintenance of benches, foundations and walls.

A wide range of products, both within one manufacturer and also competitive companies, allows the selection of materials for each type of surface - applied at different temperatures and with different degrees of soil hydration. This situation may unfortunately be a problem when selecting the right product for the type of work.

What is equally important is the way, order and quality of work. You do not need to convince anyone that even the best materials will not help when the wrong technology is applied or if the guidelines in the product data sheet do not follow.

Step by step

  1. Digging up the foundation

  2. Cleans the wall

  3. Priming

  4. Thermal isolation

  5. Wall sprinkling with drainage gravel

In this entry, we want to pay attention to the most common errors and how to make the insulation correctly:

Surface cleaning

The first step, whether the insulated wall is new or we are renovating the insulation in the old building, is thoroughly cleaning the surface. For this purpose, we use a brush with thick and stiff bristles. In the case of cleaning old walls, we pay special attention to removing the soil that is lying in the technological cavities. This applies especially to stone and grout holes, etc.

Priming

Prepare the prepared surface with a suitable substance, eg Izoplast R-W. Remember that the soil layer is much thinner than the actual insulating layer and is designed to penetrate into all gaps, cavities and pores. Priming the walls should be treated very seriously using a roof cleaner.

isolation

The time has come to apply the right insulating layer. We can use it depending on the ground in which the object is located, whether it is to be light insulation (Izoplast B, Izoplast B-W) or heavy (Izoplast 2K-W, or Izoplast Mega Tex). Insulation agents are applied with a roofing brush, trowel or mechanically. It is best to apply 2 insulating layers, after which the wall should be even and the insulation layer should be several millimeters.

It's time to dry

After completing all work with insulating masses, allow the walls to dry, so that moisture freely evaporates into the atmosphere.

Tools

An important aspect that also determines the quality of the work done is used for this tool. A brush with too soft bristles will not clean the surface of the wall properly, a styrofoam instead of a metal float will make it difficult to apply insulation, etc. It is worth acquiring the tools indicated in the instructions for use of the product.

Selection of proper waterproofing

The pictures below show the effect of mistakenly chosen waterproofing. The customer used damp proofing in a situation that explicitly ordered heavy waterproofing. Water in the excavation got into the building.
